The Tarot through the Ages...

There are many friends out there who are new to the Tarot. It is for themthat I am providing a brief history of the Tarot.

There are many theories about the origin of the Tarot, but no one knows for certain that where and how the Tarot originated. Some place its origin as recently as 14th or 15th centuary Europe, since the earliest known complete decks dates back from that time.

The most popular theory is that the Tarot was invented in ancient Egypt and brought to Europe around the 14th centuary by the Gypsies.

According to these scholars, the allegorical illustartions shown on the cards of the Major Arcana were derived from the teachings of the secret schools of Egypt.

Yet another theory suggests that the Tarot philosophy was derived from that of the Cabala. The order of the Major Arcana is connected to the Hebrew system of letters and numbers. The Cabala is a mystical Jewish tradition which teaches that it is possible through symbolic interpretation of ancient texts, to raise your consciousness above the leve of the mundane knowledge and lead you to an understanding of and union with the divine. Many teachings of the Cabalists were never written down but were passed on from teacher to student by word of mouth and kept secret from outsiders. The kind of symbolism used in the Major Arcana is a way of preserving those secrets without making them readily available to the uninitiated.

The origin of the Minor Arcana is also a question. Some researchers believe they were part of the original Egyptian deck. Others say they were added around the 14th centuary from an Italian card game known as tarocchi. Etteilla, a great exponent of the Tarot explains that the name derives from the Egyptian words 'tar' meaning "a path" and 'ro' meaning "royal", which together means "the royal path of life".

Whatever the origin of the Tarot may be, it is clear that the symbolism of the cards is universal, speaking to many different cultures and philosophies. The Tarot is a window through which one is able to look at the past, the present and the future.

Firstly, I would like to mention that this blog is dedicated to those who believe in possibilities. Possibility that we as humans can perform extraordinary feats. Possibility to perform feats like knowing the past, the present and the future! Sounds weird? Well it won't if you believe in possibilities. An open mind is all that is needed.

Anyway now you must be wondering why I am talking about all these 'believing in possiblities' !
I am saying so because like any of the skeptics out there I was once a skeptic too, but I came across many stuff which made me change my perspective and I am happy it did.

Secondly, I would like to tell you something about myself.
By profession I am a Software Engineer living in India and have always been a good student of Science. I am in my middle 20's. Physics was my favourite subject at High School. Since childhood I have been fascinated by 'mysterious stuff', stuff which are ‘presently’ scientifically inexplicable. Stuff which made me wonder 'how is this possible?' , 'how is this happening?'. At High School when I was studying Gravitation, I came to know that the cause of Gravitation is still an enigma to scientists! I started wondering 'well if science can't still explain gravitation but still we use its laws all the time then why not try these other mysterious stuff which still can't be explained by science!'

Thus I began my journey in the common mysterious stuff around me of which the most intriguing one was the 'Tarot Cards'. Its mostly visible in local news papers and the electronic media these days. Actually I am also a big Cricket fan. I was watching a live telecast of a major international series and just before the start of the match, the television channel had invited a Tarot Cards reader to predict the outcome of the match. She was a middle aged lady who seemed to be like a very normal person sans all the big gem stoned rings, beads and other unusual stuff. She was dressed in a simple normal dress and looked very kind.

The Tarot Card reader (the person who interprets the meaning of the cards) shuffled the card deck and pulled out few cards from the pile and started telling about the match. She told about the would-be victorious team. At that time it was just another 'nonsense' and waste of time for me, but after the match was over and her 'prediction' came to be absolutely true, it stunned me like anything! But still I was a strong skeptic at that time so I decided to check out the results of other matches as well. I waited for the next match and saw her predicting about the match that day. It came true as well! I saw her predictions for all the remaining matches in the series and unfailingly all her predictions came true!

I kept wondering 'how is this possible?'. How can someone know what is going to happen in the future which does'nt even exists now! These questions kept bugging me for days and finally I decided to check out what are actually these Tarot Cards! Soon I was searching the web, the local libraries and local book stores. I found volumes of information. I kept reading and reading and reading. After having gone through volumes of information and text on the subject I decided to try it out myself and thus bought my first Tarot deck and thus began my quest for answers. Very soon I was able to ask questions relating to my daily life. Questions relating to my career, family, health and of course Sports!

Answers came sometimes directly and sometimes indirectly; at times the cards spoke a very simple language and at times very complex. But none the less they were always correct! Sometimes the answers seemed irrelevant but soon after some time passed their relevance seemed to become apparent. It was very interesting and as well as very intriguing.

I spoke about the cards to some close friends and family members and most of them were very amused but all interested in asking their queries. I began answering their queries in my free time since now it was becoming a hobby of mine, answering their queries relating to a wide range of issues. Issues of health, career, education, situations and of course questions relating to their love life. Questions relating to love and relationships were most common. Some friend would ask "Can you tell what this girl thinks of me?", "Will this girl accept my proposal if I propose to her?", "How do I patch up with my boy friend?", etc etc...

All this while soon I lost my intrigue regarding the cards, it was more intriguing to watch the reactions and outcomes of the querrents ( person who asks the question ) after the cards gave the answers. Sometimes it was difficult because some answers were contrary to what people expect but sometimes its very fulfilling seeing the smile and happiness in their eyes.

Now its been more than 4 years since i began consulting the cards. The cards seem to have bonded with me. But now I hardly get much time to ask questions for myself, its mostly questions for my friends and family members that I ask. It does gives a sense of fulfillment.
Now I am no longer a skeptic because I have experienced the power of possibilities for long now.
Just because we can't explain something presently does not mean that its not worth trying for.
It just takes an open mind and some effort and we can have the answers to all that we truly seek.
